اتساع و ولوولوس معده، که معمولاً نفخ نامیده می‌شود، وضعیت اورژانسی تهدیدکننده حیات است که در آن معده پر از گاز شده و سپس بر روی خود می‌پیچد. پیچش گاز را حبس می‌کند، جریان خون را قطع می‌کند و طی چند ساعت شوک ایجاد می‌کند. عمدتاً نژادهای بزرگ و غول‌پیکر با سینه عمیق را درگیر می‌کند. تثبیت فوری و جراحی برای نجات جان سگ لازم است.
