صرع ایدیوپاتیک شایع‌ترین علت تشنج‌های مکرر در سگ‌هاست، بدون علت ساختاری یا متابولیک قابل شناسایی و با پایه ژنتیکی مفروض. تشنج‌ها معمولاً بین سن ۶ ماه تا ۶ سالگی آغاز می‌شوند. این وضعیت در درازمدت با داروهای ضدتشنج مدیریت می‌شود.
