مسمومیت با مس ناشی از مازاد مس است که گوسفندان به‌طور منحصربه‌فردی به آن حساس‌اند زیرا مس را در کبد ذخیره می‌کنند تا ناگهان آزاد شود. مکمل‌دهی مزمن بیش از حد، خوراک غنی از مس یا تغذیه با جیره گاو یا خوک باعث تجمع مس در کبد طی هفته‌ها تا ماه‌ها می‌شود. سپس یک محرک استرسی باعث بحران همولیتیک ناگهانی با تخریب گسترده گلبول قرمز، زردی، ادرار قهوه‌ای تیره، ضعف و اغلب مرگ می‌شود. بز و شترسانان تحمل بیشتری دارند اما همچنان ممکن است مبتلا شوند.
