ویروس وست‌نایل یک فلاوی‌ویروس منتقله از پشه است که در چرخه‌ای بین پرنده و پشه حفظ می‌شود. اسب‌ها میزبان‌های نهایی بسیار حساسی هستند که می‌توانند به بیماری عصبی جدی مبتلا شوند، در حالی که بسیاری از پرندگان وحشی و اهلی ویروس را تقویت می‌کنند. انسان‌ها، مانند اسب‌ها، از طریق گزش پشه آلوده می‌شوند و مستقیماً از اسب مبتلا نمی‌شوند، اما چرخه مشترک آن را به یک بیماری مشترک مهم تبدیل می‌کند.
