Sobre la paloma Módena

La Módena es una paloma de fantasía italiana, robusta y de cuerpo corto, apreciada en el Perú por su amplia gama de colores y su temperamento tranquilo y noble.

La Módena es una raza de paloma de fantasía originaria del norte de Italia, cuyo nombre viene de la ciudad de Módena. Es un ave compacta y achaparrada, es decir, de cuerpo corto y redondeado en lugar de alargado y esbelto. En el Perú y en otros países se cría sobre todo para exhibición y como paloma de compañía, no para carreras ni para producción de carne.

Se reconocen dos tipos de exhibición. Las Schietti son aves de un solo color uniforme, mientras que las Gazzi tienen la cabeza, las alas y la cola de color sobre un cuerpo blanco. En ambos tipos la raza presenta una gama muy amplia de colores y dibujos, y esa variedad explica por qué mantiene un grupo fiel de criadores.

En cuanto al carácter, la Módena es dócil, tranquila y de trato fácil. Suele adaptarse bien al palomar, tolera la manipulación y muchas veces se recomienda a quienes recién empiezan con las palomas de fantasía. Los adultos alcanzan un tamaño mediano y viven entre 8 y 12 años si reciben buenos cuidados.

A quién le conviene

La Módena le conviene a quien busca un ave ornamental para el palomar, de carácter tranquilo. Su temperamento dócil facilita el manejo, más que en razas inquietas, y por eso es una buena opción para quienes recién comienzan con las palomas de fantasía y para expositores que necesitan un ave que se quede quieta sobre la mesa de juzgamiento. No es la mejor alternativa para quien busca un ave voladora o mensajera, porque la raza se selecciona por forma y color, no por vuelo.

Historia y origen

La Módena se desarrolló en la ciudad italiana de Módena y sus alrededores, donde se crió durante siglos antes de estandarizarse y exportarse como paloma de exhibición.

La raza toma su nombre de Módena, en la región de Emilia-Romaña, en el norte de Italia. La cría de palomas en esa zona tiene una tradición muy antigua, y durante generaciones los criadores locales seleccionaron aves por su color y por un cuerpo corto y redondeado. Los antecesores italianos a veces se hacían volar en un juego de palomas en el que las aves eran arreadas y luego atrapadas, una práctica que favoreció un tipo robusto y activo.

Con el paso del tiempo, los criadores dejaron de priorizar el rendimiento en vuelo y se concentraron en la apariencia. La selección se fijó en el cuerpo achaparrado, la postura erguida y la amplia variedad de colores que hoy definen a la raza. En esta misma etapa quedaron establecidas las dos categorías de exhibición: la Schietti, de color uniforme, y la Gazzi, con el patrón de marcas de color sobre cuerpo blanco.

La Módena se extendió más allá de Italia hasta Alemania, donde los criadores desarrollaron un tipo de exhibición algo más grande y refinado, conocido como Módena alemana. Desde allí y desde Italia, la raza llegó a Gran Bretaña y a Norteamérica, donde pasó a ser una entrada habitual en las exposiciones de palomas.

Hoy la Módena es una de las razas de fantasía más numerosas en las exposiciones, y se cría tanto en Europa como en Norteamérica. La cría actual sigue centrada en el tipo, la postura y la amplia gama de colores y dibujos, y no en ningún uso de trabajo.

Aspecto y estándar de la raza

La Módena es una paloma corta y robusta, de pecho redondeado, porte erguido y una amplia gama de colores dentro de sus dos tipos principales de marcaje.

La Módena tiene una constitución achaparrada bien marcada. El cuerpo es corto y profundo, el pecho es ancho y se lleva alto, y la espalda es corta. El ave se para erguida, con la cola despegada del suelo y las alas apoyadas sobre la cola en lugar de cruzarse por debajo. La cabeza es redondeada y el pico es mediano y grueso. La silueta general es compacta y redondeada, que es el punto central del estándar de la raza.

Plumaje y colores

El plumaje es liso y se ajusta al cuerpo. La Módena se cría en una de las gamas de colores y dibujos más amplias de todas las palomas. Las aves Schietti presentan un solo color sólido en todo el cuerpo. Las aves Gazzi son blancas en la mayor parte del cuerpo, con el color limitado a la cabeza, los escudos de las alas y la cola. Dentro de estos tipos, la raza aparece en franjas, escamado y tonos sólidos que van del azul al negro, pasando por plateado, rojo, amarillo, dun y jaspeado, entre otros. En los juzgamientos se evalúan tanto la forma y la postura como la uniformidad y la nitidez de las marcas de color.

Temperamento y comportamiento

La Módena es dócil, tranquila y de trato fácil, cualidades que facilitan su manejo en un palomar estable.
