Sobre la paloma Módena

La Módena es una paloma de fantasía italiana, de tamaño mediano, cuerpo compacto y carácter tranquilo, criada por su enorme variedad de colores.

La Módena es una raza de paloma de fantasía originaria del norte de Italia, con el nombre de la ciudad de Módena. Es un ave compacta y rechoncha, es decir, de cuerpo corto y redondeado en lugar de alargado y esbelto. Se cría sobre todo para exhibición y como paloma de compañía, no para el vuelo de carreras ni para consumo.

Se reconocen dos tipos de exhibición. Las Schietti son aves de un solo color uniforme, mientras que las Gazzi presentan cabeza, alas y cola de color sobre un cuerpo blanco. En ambos tipos la raza ofrece una gama de colores y dibujos muy amplia, lo cual explica en buena parte su popularidad entre los criadores de palomas.

En cuanto a carácter, la Módena es dócil, tranquila y de trato fácil. Suele adaptarse bien al palomar, tolera que la manipulen y con frecuencia se recomienda a quienes se inician en la cría de palomas de fantasía. Los adultos alcanzan tamaño mediano y viven entre 8 y 12 años si reciben buenos cuidados.

A quién le conviene

La Módena es ideal para quienes buscan un ave ornamental de temperamento apacible para el palomar. Su carácter dócil facilita el manejo frente a razas más nerviosas, por lo que resulta una buena opción para principiantes en la cría de palomas de fantasía y para expositores que necesitan un ave que se mantenga quieta en la mesa de juzgamiento. No es la mejor opción para quien busca una paloma voladora o mensajera, pues la raza se selecciona por forma y color, no por desempeño en vuelo.

Historia y origen

La Módena se desarrolló en la ciudad italiana de Módena y sus alrededores, donde se crió durante siglos antes de estandarizarse y exportarse como raza de exhibición.

La raza toma su nombre de Módena, en la región de Emilia-Romaña, al norte de Italia. La cría de palomas en la zona tiene una larga tradición, y durante generaciones los criadores seleccionaron aves locales por su color y por un cuerpo corto y redondeado. Los antecesores italianos a veces se soltaban en un deporte de vuelo en grupo en el que las aves eran arreadas y atrapadas, práctica que favoreció un tipo robusto y activo.

Con el tiempo los criadores dejaron de lado el rendimiento en vuelo para enfocarse en la apariencia. La selección se fijó en el cuerpo rechoncho, la postura erguida y la amplia gama de colores que definen a la raza hoy en día. En esa misma época se consolidaron las dos divisiones de exhibición: Schietti para las aves de color uniforme y Gazzi para el patrón de cuerpo blanco con marcas de color.

La Módena se extendió más allá de Italia hasta Alemania, donde los criadores desarrollaron un tipo de exhibición algo más grande y refinado, conocido a menudo como Módena alemana. Desde ahí y desde Italia, la raza llegó a Gran Bretaña y a Norteamérica, donde se volvió habitual en las exposiciones colombófilas.

Hoy la Módena es una de las razas de fantasía con mayor presencia en las exposiciones, criada en Europa y Norteamérica. La cría actual se centra en el tipo, la postura y la amplia gama de colores y dibujos, sin ningún fin utilitario de por medio.

Apariencia y estándar de la raza

La Módena es una paloma corta y robusta, de pecho redondeado y porte erguido, con una amplia gama de colores en sus dos tipos principales de dibujo.

La Módena es, ante todo, rechoncha. El cuerpo es corto y profundo, el pecho es ancho y se lleva en alto, y la espalda es corta. El ave se para erguida, con la cola levantada del suelo y las alas apoyadas sobre la cola en lugar de cruzarse por debajo. La cabeza es redondeada y el pico es mediano y robusto. La silueta general, compacta y redondeada, es el punto central del estándar de la raza.

Plumaje y colores

El plumaje es liso y se ajusta al cuerpo. La Módena se cría en una de las gamas de color y dibujo más amplias de cualquier raza de paloma. Las aves Schietti presentan un solo color sólido en todo el cuerpo. Las Gazzi son blancas en la mayor parte del cuerpo, con el color limitado a la cabeza, los escudos de las alas y la cola. Dentro de estos tipos, la raza aparece en franjas, ajedrezado y tonos sólidos, en azules, negros, plateados, rojos, amarillos, dun y jaspeados, entre otros. En las exposiciones se evalúan tanto la forma y la postura como la uniformidad y nitidez de las marcas de color.
