Sobre la paloma Módena

La Módena es una paloma de exhibición italiana, de tamaño medio y cuerpo rechoncho, apreciada por su enorme variedad de colores y su carácter tranquilo.

La Módena es una raza de paloma de exhibición originaria del norte de Italia, concretamente de la ciudad de Módena, de la que toma su nombre. Es un ave compacta y rechoncha: el cuerpo es corto y redondeado, no alargado ni esbelto. Se cría sobre todo como ave de concurso y de compañía, no para el vuelo deportivo ni para el consumo de carne.

Existen dos grandes tipos de exposición. Los ejemplares Schietti presentan un solo color uniforme en todo el plumaje, mientras que los Gazzi muestran la cabeza, las alas y la cola coloreadas sobre un cuerpo blanco. Dentro de ambos tipos, la raza reúne una variedad de colores y dibujos muy amplia, uno de los motivos por los que cuenta con tantos aficionados entre los criadores de palomas.

En cuanto al carácter, la Módena es dócil, tranquila y de trato fácil. Suele adaptarse bien al palomar y tolera la manipulación, por lo que se recomienda a menudo a quienes se inician en la cría de palomas de exhibición. A quién le conviene

La Módena encaja con quienes buscan un ave ornamental de temperamento tranquilo para el palomar. Su carácter dócil facilita el manejo frente a razas más nerviosas: resulta apta tanto para quienes se inician en la colombicultura de exhibición como para expositores que necesitan un ejemplar que se quede quieto sobre la mesa de juicio. No es la mejor opción para quien busca un ave voladora o mensajera, ya que la raza se selecciona por su forma y su color, no por su capacidad de vuelo.

Historia y origen

La Módena se desarrolló en la ciudad italiana de Módena, donde se crio durante siglos antes de normalizarse como raza de exposición y exportarse a otros países.

El nombre de la raza procede de Módena, en la región de Emilia-Romaña, al norte de Italia. La cría de palomas en la zona tiene una larga tradición, y durante generaciones los criadores locales seleccionaron a las aves por su color y por un cuerpo corto y redondeado. Los antecesores italianos se volaban en un juego de bandada en el que las aves eran conducidas y capturadas, una práctica que favoreció un tipo de ave robusta y activa.

Con el tiempo, los criadores fueron dejando de lado el rendimiento en vuelo para centrarse en el aspecto. La selección se decantó por el cuerpo rechoncho, la postura erguida y la amplia gama de colores que definen hoy la raza. En esta época quedaron establecidas las dos variedades de exposición: la Schietti, de color uniforme, y la Gazzi, con el cuerpo blanco y marcas de color.

La raza se extendió desde Italia hacia Alemania, donde los criadores desarrollaron un tipo de exposición algo más grande y refinado, conocido como Módena alemana. Desde Alemania y desde la propia Italia, la raza llegó a Gran Bretaña y a Norteamérica, donde pasó a ser habitual en los concursos de palomas.

Hoy en día, la Módena es una de las razas de exhibición más numerosas en los concursos, y se cría tanto en Europa como en Norteamérica. La cría actual sigue centrada en el tipo, la postura y la amplia variedad de colores y dibujos, y no en ninguna aptitud de trabajo.

Aspecto y estándar de la raza

La Módena es una paloma corta y rechoncha, de pecho redondeado y porte erguido, con una amplia gama de colores repartida entre sus dos variedades principales.

El rasgo más característico de la Módena es su silueta rechoncha. El cuerpo es corto y profundo, el pecho es ancho y se porta alto, y la espalda es corta. El ave se mantiene erguida, con la cola separada del suelo y las alas apoyadas sobre ella en lugar de cruzadas por debajo. La cabeza es redondeada y el pico, de tamaño medio, es grueso. El conjunto forma un contorno compacto y redondeado, que constituye el punto central del estándar de la raza.

Plumaje y colores

El plumaje es liso y se ajusta al cuerpo. La Módena se cría en una de las gamas de colores y dibujos más amplias de todas las razas de paloma. Los ejemplares Schietti presentan un único color sólido en todo el cuerpo. Los Gazzi son blancos en la mayor parte del cuerpo, con el color limitado a la cabeza, los escudos alares y la cola. Dentro de estos dos tipos, la raza aparece en barrado, escamado y color sólido, sobre tonos azules, negros, plateados, rojos, amarillos, dun (pardo) y mealy (melado), entre otros. En los concursos se valoran tanto la forma y la postura como la limpieza y la uniformidad de las marcas de color.
