About the Modena pigeon
The Modena is a stocky, compact Italian fancy pigeon prized for its enormous range of colours and its calm, easy-going nature.
The Modena is a fancy pigeon breed that hails from the north of Italy, taking its name from the city of Modena. It has a compact, cobby shape, meaning the body is short and rounded instead of long and streamlined. Fanciers keep the breed mainly for showing and companionship rather than for racing or the pot.
Two show types are recognised. Schietti birds are self-coloured, carrying one shade right through, while Gazzi birds show a coloured head, wings and tail set against a white body. Between the two types the breed spans an enormous range of colours and patterns, which explains why it has held a loyal following among pigeon keepers for generations.
The Modena's temperament is gentle, placid and easy to manage. It settles into a loft without fuss, copes well with handling, and is frequently recommended to newcomers taking up fancy pigeons for the first time. Fully grown birds are medium-sized and, given good care, will live for roughly 8 to 12 years.

Who it suits
The Modena suits keepers after an ornamental loft bird with a quiet disposition. Because it is so docile, it is far easier to handle than flightier breeds, which makes it a sound choice for first-time fancy pigeon owners and for exhibitors who want a bird that will stand still on the show bench. It is not the right fit for anyone after a flying or homing performer, since the breed is bred purely for shape and colour, not for flight.
History and origin
The Modena took shape in and around the Italian city of Modena over centuries of selective breeding, before being standardised and exported abroad as a show bird.
The breed is named after Modena, a city in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. Pigeon keeping has deep roots there, and local fanciers selected their birds over many generations for colour and for a short, rounded body. The early Italian birds were sometimes flown in a flock sport where they were driven up and caught, a practice that favoured a stocky, active type.
As time went on, breeders turned their attention away from flying ability and towards appearance. Selection settled on the cobby build, the upright stance and the wide colour range that mark the breed out today. The two show divisions, Schietti for self-coloured birds and Gazzi for the white-bodied, colour-marked pattern, were established during this period.
From Italy the Modena travelled to Germany, where breeders developed a somewhat larger, more refined exhibition type often known as the German Modena. From there, and from Italy directly, the breed made its way to Britain and on to North America, becoming a familiar entry at pigeon shows.
The Modena remains one of the more widely kept fancy pigeon breeds on the show bench today, found across Europe and North America. Breeders continue to focus on type, stance and the broad colour and pattern range rather than on any working purpose.
Appearance and breed standard
The Modena is a short, stocky pigeon with a rounded chest, an upright stance and a wide spread of colours across its two main marking types.
The Modena is unmistakably cobby in shape. The body is short and deep, the chest broad and carried high, and the back short. The bird stands upright, holding its tail clear of the ground, with the wings resting on top of the tail rather than crossed beneath it. The head is rounded and the beak medium and stout. The whole outline is compact and rounded, which is the main point judges look for against the breed standard.
| Feature | Standard |
|---|---|
| Height | Compact, roughly 18 to 20 cm tall in stance |
| Weight | About 280 to 400 g depending on type |
| Coat | Smooth, tight feathering |
| Colours | Many, including blue, black, silver, red, yellow, dun and mealy |
| Eyes | Orange to red, set in a fine eye cere |
Coat and colours
The feathering lies smooth and tight against the body. Few pigeon breeds come in as wide a colour and pattern range as the Modena. Schietti birds carry a single solid colour over the whole body, while Gazzi birds are white over most of the body with colour confined to the head, wing shields and tail. Within these two types the breed turns up in bars, checks and self shades across blues, blacks, silvers, reds, yellows, duns and mealy tones, among others. Judges weigh up both the shape and stance of the bird and how even and clear the colour markings are.
Temperament and behaviour
The Modena is gentle, placid and docile, qualities that make it easy to handle and well suited to a settled loft.
The Modena carries a quiet, even temper. It is good-natured and copes well with regular handling, which explains why it is such a popular show bird and such a common recommendation for people starting out. Birds usually settle into a loft quickly and lack the nervous, flighty edge seen in some flying breeds.
Around people the breed stays calm and is not prone to panic when picked up, so long as handling is gentle and consistent. It gets along well with other pigeons and does fine in a mixed loft, though pairs will guard their own nest box once breeding starts. The Modena does not turn aggressive towards its keeper and rarely puts up much of a struggle when held. As a flock bird it thrives on company and is not one to keep on its own.

Care and daily needs
The Modena needs a clean, dry loft, fresh water, room to move about and regular checks of feet and feathers to stay in good health.
Day-to-day care comes down to a clean loft, sound ventilation without draughts, and steady access to feed, fresh water and grit. The breed copes well as long as it is kept dry and away from damp conditions.
Grooming
- Offer a shallow bath two or three times a week so the birds can keep their feathers clean.
- Check feet and toes for dirt, scale build-up and overgrown nails.
- Watch the smooth feathering for parasites and treat the loft promptly if mites or lice turn up.
- Keep nest bowls and perches clean to avoid soiled plumage.
Exercise
- Give daily access to a roomy aviary or loft so birds can move about and stretch their wings.
- Allow space for short flights and wing flapping, even though the breed is not flown competitively.
- Avoid overcrowding, which raises stress levels and disease risk.
Environment
House the Modena in a dry, well-ventilated loft with walls secure against predators and rodents. Give each pair its own perch and nest box so they can claim their own space. Keep floor litter dry and change it before it turns damp or soiled. The breed copes with South Africa's range of climates, from the cooler highveld winters to the humid coastal belt, provided it is sheltered from cold, wet draughts and from harsh direct heat.
Nutrition and feeding
The Modena does well on a balanced pigeon grain mix with constant access to grit and fresh water, stepped up during breeding and moulting.
The Modena eats a standard pigeon diet of mixed grains and seeds, such as maize, wheat, peas, sorghum and other legumes. Protein needs go up during breeding and moulting and drop back during quieter periods. Birds need constant access to clean water and hard grit, since pigeons rely on grit to grind food down in the gizzard. A separate supply of crushed oyster shell or a mineral mix provides the calcium that breeding hens draw on for eggshells.
| Life stage | Amount per day | Meals |
|---|---|---|
| Adult, resting | About 25 to 30 g of grain mix | 1 to 2 |
| Breeding pair | About 35 to 45 g, higher protein | 2 |
| Moulting bird | About 30 to 35 g, higher protein | 2 |
Treats and supplements
Small amounts of greens and safe seeds make a fine treat but should not take the place of the main grain mix. A vitamin and mineral supplement in the water or feed helps during breeding and moulting. Probiotics are sometimes added after stress or a course of medication. Stick to label rates for any supplement, since over-supplementing can do just as much harm as a shortfall.
Health and common conditions
The Modena is a hardy pigeon that lives roughly 8 to 12 years, and most of its health problems come from common pigeon parasites and infections that clear up with clean housing and routine care.
The Modena is a robust breed and stays healthy when kept clean, dry and free of overcrowding. Typical lifespan runs to about 8 to 12 years. Most illness in the breed is not unique to it but shared across pigeons generally, driven by parasites, respiratory germs and protozoa that spread in damp or crowded lofts.
| Condition | Signs | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Canker (trichomoniasis) | Yellow growths in the throat, trouble swallowing | Protozoal, treatable; common in young birds |
| Coccidiosis | Loose droppings, weight loss, low energy | Worse in damp, dirty lofts |
| Respiratory infection | Sneezing, nasal discharge, laboured breathing | Improve ventilation and cut crowding |
| External parasites | Restlessness, feather damage, mites or lice seen | Treat bird and loft together |
| Paramyxovirus | Twisted neck, paralysis, watery droppings | Vaccination is widely used to prevent it |
Preventive care
- Keep the loft dry, clean and well ventilated to cut down on parasite and protozoa loads.
- Quarantine new or returning birds before letting them join the flock.
- Stick to a regular schedule for worming and parasite control.
- Use pigeon vaccination, such as against paramyxovirus, where it is available and recommended.
- Keep an eye on droppings and weight as early warning signs of illness.
Training and handling
The Modena is not a flying breed, so training amounts to gentle taming and show-bench conditioning rather than flight or homing work.
Since the Modena is bred for shape and colour rather than flight, training focuses on calm handling and show preparation rather than racing or homing. The breed's docile nature makes it cooperative, and birds handled often from a young age grow used to being lifted, posed and judged. Patience and routine count for more than any special technique.
Basics
- Handle young birds gently and often so they get used to being picked up.
- Get them accustomed to a show cage or training coop well ahead of any event.
- Practise posing the bird so it stands upright and holds the breed's stance.
- Follow each handling session with a small food reward to build a positive association.
- Keep sessions short and calm so as not to stress the bird.
Habitat and housing
The Modena needs a dry, secure, well-ventilated loft with individual perches and nest boxes, kept safe from damp, draughts and predators.
The Modena is a loft bird and is housed in the same way as other fancy pigeons. The loft should be dry, free of draughts yet well ventilated, and secure against cats, rats and birds of prey. Each pair needs its own nest box and perch, and the loft should offer enough floor and air space to avoid overcrowding, which is the biggest single driver of disease. An attached aviary lets birds get air, light and room to move while staying safe.
| Parameter | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Loft type | Dry, ventilated, predator-proof building |
| Space per pair | Own nest box plus perch; avoid overcrowding |
| Ventilation | Steady airflow with no direct draughts on birds |
| Litter | Dry floor litter, replaced before it turns damp |
| Aviary | Attached flight or aviary for air and exercise |
Setup checklist
- Individual nest boxes and perches for every pair.
- Feeders and waterers kept clean and off the floor.
- A grit and mineral container available at all times.
- A shallow bath pan put out on a schedule.
- Predator and rodent proofing on doors, vents and gaps.
- A dry floor that is easy to clean.
Hatching and rearing young
Modena eggs hatch in about 17 to 19 days, and the parent birds normally handle incubating and feeding the young, so most keepers leave them to it.
Modena pairs usually rear their own young. A hen lays two eggs a couple of days apart, and both parents take turns sitting on them. The eggs hatch after roughly 17 to 19 days. Newly hatched squabs are fed crop milk, a secretion both parents produce in the first few days, before moving on to softened, regurgitated grain. Most keepers leave incubation entirely to the parents, since pigeons are dependable sitters, though an incubator can be used for foster or rescue cases with the right settings.
| Parameter | Setting |
|---|---|
| Temperature | About 37.5 C (99.5 F) in an incubator |
| Humidity | About 55 to 60 percent, raised near hatching |
| Days | Roughly 17 to 19 days |
| Turning | Several times a day if the parents are not sitting |
Hatching steps
- Let the pair settle and allow the hen to lay her clutch of two eggs.
- Leave incubation to the parents where possible, or set an incubator to the values above.
- Keep the nest area calm, clean and undisturbed while the birds are sitting.
- Check that squabs are being fed and have full crops in the first few days.
- Give the parents extra high-protein feed and calcium while they rear the young.
