What you're actually getting with the free plan
When you register for free, your pet's microchip number, your contact details, and a few basics about your pet go into a record on our pet registry, one that a vet, SPCA branch, or council officer can search at any hour. There's nothing to pay to set that record up, nothing to keep it running, and nothing to pay if you need to change your phone number or address down the line, which happens to be the bit a good number of other registries would charge you for.
Registration, updates without limit, and searchability around the clock, that's what the free lifetime plan covers. Would you like a bit more? Why we've kept this free
A microchip that's never been registered doesn't do a great deal. A vet or shelter can scan it just fine, but without a record behind that number, there's really no way for them to reach you. When registries charge for registration or updates, it tends to give owners a reason to put it off, right when a lost pet most needs those details to be current.
Because ours costs nothing at any stage, there's not much excuse for a record to fall out of date. Moved house, changed your number, rehomed a pet? Update the microchip record that same day, it only takes a few minutes.
A few questions about free registration
Is registration in New Zealand really free with you?
It is, entirely. No charge to register a new chip, none to update your details, and no renewal fee waiting somewhere down the track. Plenty of registries charge for updates or after a certain number of years, we simply don't.
Will I be asked to pay something eventually to keep it active?
No, you won't. Once a chip's registered, it stays active for your pet's whole life unless you decide to remove it yourself. There's no subscription behind the free tier keeping it going.
Can I still register a chip that isn't from United Pet Club?
Of course. Enter the microchip number printed on your pet's paperwork, or the one your vet gives you, and it registers with us just the same as one of our own chips would.
How does the free plan compare with the upgraded ones?
The free lifetime plan covers what matters most: your contact details, your pet's information, and searchability around the clock, at no cost, for life. Upgraded plans add a few extras on top, like more notification options, but you never need to upgrade just to keep the basics running.
