Feline urethral obstruction
Urethral obstruction is a life-threatening emergency in which a cat cannot pass urine because the urethra is blocked by a plug, stone, inflammation or spasm. It occurs almost exclusively in male cats due to their narrow urethra. Without rapid relief, the bladder distends, toxins accumulate, and dangerous potassium elevations can cause fatal heart rhythm disturbances within one to two days. Immediate veterinary treatment is essential.
