Botulism
Botulism is a rapidly progressive, often fatal neuromuscular paralysis caused by toxins of Clostridium botulinum. Horses are extremely sensitive and may ingest preformed toxin in spoiled forage or, in foals, produce it in the gut (shaker foal syndrome). It causes progressive flaccid weakness and difficulty swallowing.
