Megaesophagus
Hereditary
Megaesophagus is a generalized loss of esophageal muscle tone and motility, so the esophagus dilates and cannot move food into the stomach. Food and fluid pool and are regurgitated, often leading to aspiration pneumonia. It may be congenital or acquired secondary to nerve, muscle, or hormonal disease. It is managed by upright feeding and treating the underlying cause.
