Also known as: Euterentzündung
Mastitis is udder inflammation in ewes, does, and camelid dams, ranging from life-threatening acute disease to silent subclinical infection. It reduces milk and the growth and survival of young.
Bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Mannheimia haemolytica enter through the teat, often aided by teat injuries, orf lesions, poor hygiene, or hard-nursing offspring.
Acute cases show a hot, hard, painful udder, abnormal or bloody milk, fever, and lethargy; gangrenous mastitis turns the udder cold and blue. Chronic cases have lumps and reduced milk with few outward signs.
Udder examination, milk appearance, somatic cell counts, and bacterial culture identify infection and the organism involved.
Antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, frequent stripping, and supportive care treat acute cases; severely damaged glands may need culling of the animal.
Good hygiene, treating teat lesions and orf, managing nursing pressure, culling chronically infected animals, and careful drying-off reduce mastitis.
