Contagious bovine pleuropneumonia (CBPP) is a serious, contagious mycoplasmal lung disease of cattle and a priority disease for control and eradication in endemic regions.
Infection with Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides, spread by respiratory droplets through close contact; carrier animals can maintain infection in a herd.
Fever, dullness, loss of appetite, coughing, painful and labored breathing with a grunt, and a reluctance to move. Chronic survivors may carry walled-off lung lesions (sequestra); calves can develop joint swelling.
Clinical and herd history, serology, PCR or culture, and characteristic marbled lung lesions with pleural fluid at necropsy.
Antibiotic treatment is controversial as it may create carriers; in many programs affected herds are managed by control measures rather than treatment.
Vaccination in endemic areas, movement controls, surveillance, quarantine, and stamping-out in newly infected zones.
