Die gastrointestinale Stase ist ein häufiges, potenziell lebensbedrohliches Syndrom, bei dem die normale Darmmotilität sich verlangsamt oder zum Stillstand kommt. Sie ist meist sekundär zu einem anderen Problem wie Schmerzen, Zahnerkrankungen, ungeeigneter Fütterung, Dehydratation oder Stress. Die verminderte Motilität führt zu Appetitlosigkeit, spärlichem oder fehlendem Kotabsatz, Gasansammlung und Austrocknung des Darminhalts. Rasches Erkennen und Behandeln sind wesentlich, da eine anhaltende Stase tödlich verlaufen kann.
Gastrointestinal stasis, sometimes called ileus, is one of the most frequent emergencies in pet rabbits. The gut slows or stops moving, causing a cascade of secondary problems.
Stasis is almost always a symptom of an underlying issue: low-fiber diet, dental pain, anorexia from any illness, pain, dehydration, stress, or lack of exercise. Reduced fiber intake disrupts normal hindgut fermentation.
Affected rabbits eat less or stop eating, produce smaller or no fecal pellets, become lethargic, may sit hunched, and can show a bloated or painful abdomen.
Diagnosis is based on history and examination, supported by abdominal palpation, radiographs to assess gas and to rule out obstruction, and blood tests to find underlying disease.
Treatment includes rehydration, pain relief, syringe feeding of fiber, motility-supporting drugs once obstruction is excluded, and correcting the underlying cause. Warmth and encouraging movement help.
A high-fiber diet built on unlimited grass hay, dental care, hydration, exercise, and stress reduction prevents most episodes.
