Über den Modeneser
Der Modeneser ist eine gedrungene, mittelgroße italienische Rassetaube mit vielen Farbschlägen und einem ruhigen, gutmütigen Wesen.
Der Modeneser ist eine Rassetaube aus Norditalien, benannt nach der Stadt Modena. Sein Körperbau ist kompakt und gedrungen, also kurz und rundlich statt lang und schlank. Die Rasse dient vor allem der Ausstellung und der Liebhaberei, nicht dem Wettflug oder der Fleischerzeugung.
Bei Ausstellungen werden zwei Typen unterschieden. Die Schietti sind einfarbige Vögel in einem einzigen Farbton, die Gazzi zeigen einen farbigen Kopf, farbige Flügel und einen farbigen Schwanz vor einem weißen Körper. Innerhalb beider Typen zeigt die Rasse eine sehr breite Palette an Farben und Zeichnungen, weshalb sie unter Taubenzüchtern bis heute einen festen Kreis von Anhängern hat.
Im Wesen ist der Modeneser sanft, ruhig und gutmütig. Er gewöhnt sich meist rasch an seinen Schlag und lässt sich gut anfassen. Gerade deshalb wird er oft Einsteigern in die Rassetaubenzucht empfohlen. Ausgewachsene Tiere erreichen mittlere Größe und werden bei guter Haltung etwa 8 bis 12 Jahre alt.

Für wen sich der Modeneser eignet
Der Modeneser eignet sich für Halter, die eine dekorative, ruhige Schlagtaube suchen. Weil er gutmütig und leicht zu handhaben ist, passt er sowohl zu Einsteigern in die Rassetaubenzucht als auch zu Ausstellern, die eine Taube brauchen, die im Schaukäfig ruhig sitzen bleibt. Für Halter, die eine Flug- oder Brieftaube wollen, ist er weniger geeignet, denn die Zucht zielt auf Form und Farbe und nicht auf Flugleistung.
Geschichte und Herkunft
Der Modeneser entstand in und um die italienische Stadt Modena, wurde dort über Jahrhunderte gezüchtet und später als Ausstellungsrasse standardisiert und exportiert.
Der Name der Rasse geht auf Modena in der italienischen Region Emilia-Romagna zurück. Die Taubenzucht hat dort eine lange Tradition, und die örtlichen Vögel wurden über viele Generationen auf Farbe und einen kurzen, runden Körper selektiert. Die italienischen Vorläufer der Rasse wurden teils in einem Schwarmflugspiel eingesetzt, bei dem Tiere aufgescheucht und wieder eingefangen wurden. Das förderte einen kräftigen, aktiven Schlag.
Mit der Zeit verlagerten Züchter ihr Augenmerk von der Flugleistung auf das äußere Erscheinungsbild. Durchgesetzt haben sich der gedrungene Körperbau, die aufrechte Haltung und die breite Farbpalette, die die Rasse bis heute prägen. In dieser Zeit entstanden auch die beiden Ausstellungsgruppen: die einfarbigen Schietti und die weißkörperigen Gazzi mit farbiger Zeichnung.
Von Italien aus verbreitete sich der Modeneser bis nach Deutschland. Dort entwickelten Züchter einen etwas größeren und feineren Ausstellungstyp, der als Deutscher Modeneser bekannt wurde. Von dort und aus Italien gelangte die Rasse weiter nach Großbritannien und Nordamerika, wo sie bald zu den festen Ausstellungsvögeln auf Taubenschauen zählte.
Heute gehört der Modeneser zu den zahlenmäßig stärker vertretenen Rassetauben auf Ausstellungen und wird in Europa und Nordamerika gehalten. Die Zucht konzentriert sich weiterhin auf Typ, Haltung und die große Farb- und Zeichnungsvielfalt, nicht auf einen praktischen Nutzen.
