Also known as: ВВК
Spring viraemia of carp (SVC) is a serious systemic viral disease of carp and related cyprinids including koi and goldfish, caused by a rhabdovirus. It is a notifiable, WOAH-listed disease.
The virus (SVCV) spreads via water, contact, and parasites that act as vectors. Disease occurs at lower spring temperatures, typically below about 18 C, when fish immunity is reduced after winter.
Lethargy, darkening, loss of balance, abdominal swelling (dropsy), protruding eyes, hemorrhages in the skin and gills, pale gills, and trailing fecal casts, with significant mortality.
Diagnosis requires laboratory confirmation by virus isolation or PCR. Clinical signs overlap with bacterial dropsy and KHV, so testing is essential, and suspicion of a notifiable disease warrants reporting.
There is no specific treatment. Control relies on biosecurity, isolation, reporting to authorities, and possible movement restrictions or depopulation of affected stock.
Quarantine and source fish from disease-free suppliers, control parasite vectors, and maintain biosecurity, especially at vulnerable cooler temperatures.
