يُعد تضخم الطحال من الموجودات الشائعة جدًا لدى النمس متوسط إلى كبير السن، وغالبًا ما يعود إلى تكوّن الدم خارج النخاع الحميد أكثر منه إلى السرطان. قد يُكتشف مصادفة أثناء الفحص ككتلة بطنية كبيرة. ورغم أنه غير ضار عادة بذاته، فإن التضخم الملحوظ قد يسبب انزعاجًا وأحيانًا يعكس مرضًا كامنًا كاللمفوما. يميّز الفحص التشخيصي بين الأسباب الحميدة والخطيرة.
